      Synopsis

Moscow, 31 December 1991, 7:30pm: the Red Flag which has been flying for over seventy years over the Kremlin walls is pulled down, to be replaced by the three-coloured banner of Russia. Although apparently trivial, this action has come to forever symbolize the end of the Soviet Union. Twenty years later, The Last Days of the USSR recaptures these critical last two years which led, through a jolting acceleration of history, to the fall of the largest and one of the most repressive empires of the 20th century. Jean-Charles Deniau offers a landmark documentary on what is probably the most defining event in contemporary history.
